What to expect

How fractional CO2 works.

Step one

Consult & assess

A licensed provider evaluates your skin type and goals to plan a safe, effective treatment. Nothing is booked before this.

Step two

Resurface

Numbing keeps you comfortable while the fractional CO2 laser treats the skin in controlled passes. Plan one to two hours in clinic, depending on the area.

Step three

Heal & reveal

Skin heals over several days, then continues to smooth and firm for months as new collagen builds.

Recovery, day by day

Exactly what the downtime looks like.

Days 1–2

Warm and swollen

Skin feels hot and tight, like a strong sunburn, and looks red and puffy. This is the heaviest stretch — plan to stay home. Cold compresses and the ointment your provider gives you do most of the work.

Days 3–4

Crusting and peeling

Redness starts to settle and the skin begins to crust and flake in patches. Do not pick — it comes away on its own. Most people are comfortable but would rather not be seen.

Days 5–7

New skin, still pink

The peeling finishes and fresh skin appears underneath, pink and sensitive. Mineral makeup is usually fine from around day seven. Most people are back at work in this window.

Weeks 2–12

The real result

Pinkness fades over the following weeks while collagen rebuilds underneath. Texture, tone, and firmness keep improving for three to six months after a single session.

This is a typical course. Your own recovery depends on the settings used, the area treated, and your skin — your provider will tell you what to expect at your consultation.

Before your appointment

How to prepare.

Tell us about cold sores

If you have ever had a cold sore, say so at your consult. Laser resurfacing can trigger an outbreak, so we prescribe an antiviral to start before your treatment. This is standard and it works.

Recent isotretinoin

If you have taken isotretinoin (Accutane) in the last six to twelve months, tell your provider the date you stopped. Resurfacing is usually delayed after isotretinoin, but the waiting period is a clinical judgement your provider makes with you — not a fixed rule.

No active tan

Come with untanned skin. A fresh tan or sunburn — including spray-free self-tanner build-up — significantly raises the risk of pigment change. Avoid sun exposure and use daily SPF in the weeks beforehand.

Stop retinoids

Pause retinoids, exfoliating acids, and any prescription strength actives before treatment. Your provider will give you the exact number of days at your consult.

Not during pregnancy

Laser resurfacing is not performed during pregnancy or while nursing. Let us know and we will plan for later.

Your provider gives you a written pre- and post-treatment plan at your consultation. Following it is part of the result.

Safety and side effects

What we tell every patient before treatment.

Expect redness, swelling, and peeling in the first week — that is the treatment working, not a complication. Temporary changes in pigment, either lighter or darker, can occur and usually resolve. Infection and scarring are rare, and the pre-treatment plan your provider gives you is designed to keep them that way. Aftercare products are not an upsell here; they are part of the treatment, and skipping them affects both your comfort and your result.

This is a summary, not a complete list of risks. Your provider will review your full history and the specific risks for your skin at your consultation.

Good to know

Questions, answered.

How much downtime is there?
Plan on about a week. Days one and two are red and swollen, days three and four crust and peel, and by day five to seven new skin has come through, still pink. Most people schedule it around a long weekend or a quiet week.
How long does the appointment take?
Plan one to two hours in clinic depending on the area treated. Most of that is numbing time — the laser pass itself is the shorter part.
Does it hurt?
We apply numbing beforehand so the treatment stays comfortable. Afterward, skin feels warm and tight for a day or two, and over-the-counter pain relief and cold compresses are usually enough.
Is it safe for my skin tone?
Deeper skin tones carry a higher risk of post-treatment pigment change with ablative lasers, so we assess carefully — and often recommend a different approach that gets you the same texture and tone results more safely. That is one of the reasons every treatment starts with a consultation.
What are the side effects?
Redness, swelling, and peeling are expected in the first week. Temporary lightening or darkening of pigment can happen and usually settles. Infection and scarring are rare. Your provider reviews all of this with you before you book.
Do I need to buy aftercare products?
You need a gentle cleanser, an occlusive ointment, and a broad-spectrum SPF from the moment you are treated. These are clinically necessary, not optional — your provider will confirm exactly what you need and what is included at your consult.
When will I see results?
Skin looks fresher once the initial healing finishes, with firming and tone improvements continuing for three to six months as collagen rebuilds.
How many treatments will I need?
Many people see a dramatic difference from a single session; your provider may recommend more depending on your goals.
What does it treat?
Sun damage, uneven tone and texture, fine lines and wrinkles, enlarged-looking pores, and the appearance of scarring.
Why can’t I just book the treatment?
Because it is an ablative laser. Whether CO2 is right for you depends on your skin type, your history, and what you are actually trying to fix — and for some patients a different treatment is both safer and more effective. A provider needs to see your skin first.
Who performs the treatment?
A licensed medical provider at our physician-led Brookhaven clinic, supervised by our Medical Director.
What does it cost?
Resurfacing is $875, with add-ons for hands, neck, and chest. Your exact plan and price are confirmed at your consultation.
