IPL photofacial for sun damage and redness

Intense pulsed light reaches into the dermis to break up pigment and calm vascular redness, while prompting collagen. Age spots, sun damage, broken capillaries, and uneven tone clear progressively as your body carries the pigment away.

•  30–45 minutes   •  Minimal downtime   •  Best in a series of three

Quick Facts

One thing to plan around: treated spots darken before they clear.

Why it works

How IPL photofacial works

IPL uses multiple wavelengths of light rather than a single laser beam. The light is absorbed by pigment and by the small vessels that cause redness, breaking them up so your body can clear them naturally. The surface of the skin is left intact.

We recommend three treatments four weeks apart. Sun damage, broken capillaries, and uneven tone clear progressively, and skin looks brighter after each session.

  • Fades sun damage, brown spots, and discoloration
  • Reduces redness, broken capillaries, and rosacea
  • Improves clarity and boosts collagen
  • Non-invasive, with minimal downtime
  • Best performed as a series for full correction

What to expect afterwards

Pigmented spots darken and look like coffee grounds before they flake away naturally over five to seven days. This is the treatment working, not a reaction — but it is worth planning around events.

  • No heat — hot showers, saunas, workouts — for 24 to 48 hours
  • No retinols, exfoliants, acids, or vitamin C for 3 to 5 days
  • Avoid sun for 1 to 2 weeks and wear mineral SPF 30+ daily
  • Do not pick or scrub the darkened spots; let them shed

What IPL actually looks like

A cool gel goes on first, then the Limelight handpiece passes across the treatment area in overlapping pulses. Eye shields stay on throughout. Most of a full face is done inside half an hour.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Not sure whether IPL or Laser Genesis suits your skin? Call or text (470) 226-2390.

Am I a good candidate for IPL?

IPL works best on Fitzpatrick skin types I through III. Because it targets pigment, a deep tan or a darker skin tone can make it less suitable, and Laser Genesis or RF microneedling may be the better route. Tell us about any history of skin cancer, keloid scarring, open lesions, pregnancy, or current medications including topicals when you book.

What results can I expect?

Red and brown tones even out over time. Across a series the effect builds, peaking around three to six months, as sun damage, age spots, and other pigmentation fade. Medical-grade skincare afterwards helps hold the result.

What is the treatment like?

Cleansing, eye protection, then around 30 minutes of pulsed light. There is a slight stinging sensation, and most people are comfortable throughout.

Is there any downtime?

Very little. Mild redness or warmth may last a few hours. The main thing to plan for is the darkening of treated spots, which flake away within a week.
